Early Learning Matters Week

From 5 to 9 August, early learning communities across Australia celebrate Early Learning Matters Week.

It's a celebration of the incredible journey of early learning and its profound impact on children and communities. Early Learning Matters Week is more than just an event; it’s a nationwide movement that unites early childhood educators, parents, caregivers, and community leaders from all corners of Australia.

At Positive Pieces Education, we are committed to the social and emotional development of all children - especially our littlest learners! We believe that the most important skills children in early learning settings can attain include self-regulation, executive functioning and all important rules for staying safe. That's why we are proud to publish the Second Step® Early Learning program including social-emotional learning (SEL) & child protection lessons and resources.

SEL has been proven to increase self-regulation, improve executive function and set children up with the tools they need to successfully transition to school. When the common language and strategies taught throughout Second Step permeates an early learning setting, you see children who are better equipped with social and emotional skills and staff who are better able to model these skills.

What is Second Step Early Learning?

The Second Step Early Learning program is designed to help children harness their energy and potential by teaching them to listen, pay attention, manage their behaviour, and get along with others. When students start school with the self-regulation and social-emotional skills taught in the research-based Second Step program, they're set up for success. The program supports Learning Outcomes 1 to 5 outlined in The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) for Australia.

Second Step Early Learning social-emotional learning and child protection resources create a positive and safe learning environment for the whole child. The lessons and resources bring together social-emotional learning, executive function, self-regulation, and child safety to foster a safe and supported learning environment where children are celebrated and feel connected to their community.

The EYLF outlines the importance of implementing relational pedagogies and curriculum - relational pedagogy underpins the ways in which educators build trusting, respectful relationships between children, families, other educators and professionals, as well as members of the community. Second Step Early Learning supports this by providing family resources and home links to support connection with families, and by teaching children skills that support the building of respectful relationships.

Second Step Early Learning supports play-based learning through fully-scripted daily activities, fun Brain Builder games, puppets, and engaging songs and visuals. It is easy for anyone to use and is designed to keep children engaged. Watch the video below to learn more.

While Early Learning Matters week highlights the importance of nurturing a child's curiosity for learning and confidence to take risks through play from 5 to 9 August, we know that early learning centres across Australia are dedicated to this year in and year out. Positive Pieces Education are committed to supporting early learning educators by providing them with the tools and resources to support children to:

  • develop a strong sense of identity,

  • be connected with and contribute to their world,

  • have a strong sense of wellbeing,

  • be confident and involved learners,

  • and effective communicators.

If your early learning centre is looking for a high quality educational program that supports children's development of social and emotional skills and teaches them child safety strategies, please contact Positive Pieces Education.
